How to play Sown

Sown is a daily logic puzzle set in a garden. The garden is a square grid split into coloured plots, one plot for each row. Your job is to sow seeds so that every row, every column and every plot holds exactly one seed, and no two seeds touch each other, not even diagonally at the corners.

Tap a square once to mark it as empty with a dot, tap again to sow a seed, and once more to clear it. Drag across squares to dot lots of them at once. Squares next to a seed are dotted for you, and seeds that break a rule turn red, so you can concentrate on the thinking.

The week gets harder as it goes: Easy on Monday and Tuesday, Medium on Wednesday and Thursday, Hard on Friday and Saturday. Sunday is twin day, a 10x10 garden with two seeds in every row, column and plot. You start on 1,000 points and lose a point a second (half a point on twin days) and 50 for each hint. A new garden appears at midnight UK time, the same for everyone.

Sown FAQ

Will I ever have to guess?

No. Every garden has exactly one solution and is checked by a solver that only uses steps a person can see, such as a plot that fits inside a single row, or a square whose seed would leave a plot with nowhere to go.

What do the hints do?

A hint lights up the next thing to spot and explains why it works, in plain words. If something you have placed is wrong, the hint points that out first.

Can I play more than one a day?

Yes. Endless mode has hundreds of extra gardens at four levels, Easy, Medium, Hard and Twin. The archive also keeps the last seven daily gardens.
