How to play Trellis

Trellis is a daily word hunt. Every day there is a new 5x5 grid of letters, the same for everyone. Spell words by tracing through letters that touch up, down or sideways, like the slats of a garden trellis. Diagonals do not count, and no square can be used twice in one word.

Words are 3 to 8 letters long and longer words are worth much more: 1 point for three letters, 2 for four, 4 for five, 7 for six and 12 for seven. Every grid also hides exactly one 8-letter word, the hidden eight, worth 40 points on its own. If it eludes you, a hint marks its next letter for 5 points.

There is no clock. Your words are saved, so you can come back to the grid whenever you like. Your rank grows from Seedling to Full bloom as you get closer to the day's best possible score. Press Done for today to lock in your score for the leaderboard and your friends. A new grid appears at midnight UK time.

Trellis FAQ

Why only up, down and across?

Leaving out diagonals keeps the hunt fair and calm: each letter has at most four neighbours, so you can actually see the words rather than drown in possibilities.

Which words count?

Everyday English words of 3 to 8 letters, with British spellings. No names, abbreviations or rude words. Rarer real words are accepted too, as a bonus.

Can I keep playing after Done?

No. Done for today makes your score final, so the leaderboard and friends' challenges stay fair. You will then see every word in the grid.

Can I play old grids?

Yes. The archive keeps the last seven days. Archive plays are just for fun and are not ranked.
