The solved garden

The seeds: R1C2, R1C5, R2C8, R2C10, R3C4, R3C6, R4C8, R4C10, R5C2, R5C6, R6C4, R6C9, R7C1, R7C7, R8C3, R8C5, R9C1, R9C7, R10C3, R10C9 (R = row, C = column, counting from the top left). Every row, column and plot holds two seeds, and no two seeds touch, not even diagonally.

A twin garden: Sunday's puzzle. The hardest idea it needed was two rows split into 2x2 boxes, or plots that fill several rows between them.

How to crack it: the first moves

  1. A seed in the square in row 1, column 7 would leave the lavender plot without enough room. So it stays empty.
  2. A seed in the square in row 1, column 8 would leave the lavender plot without enough room. So it stays empty.
  3. A seed in the square in row 3, column 7 would leave the lavender plot without enough room. So it stays empty.
  4. A seed in the square in row 3, column 8 would leave the lavender plot without enough room. So it stays empty.
  5. A seed in the square in row 3, column 9 would leave the lavender plot without enough room. So it stays empty.
  6. Every free square of the sky plot is in row 4, so the plot's seeds must go there. Nothing else in row 4 can have one.

Plots are named by their colour in the picture (sage, sunflower, lavender, coral, sky, pink, teal, sand, slate, apricot). Every Sown garden can be solved this way, one deduction at a time, without guessing.

2 players took part on the day.
