How to play Prompter

Prompter is a daily finish-the-quote game. A famous line from a film, TV show, book or play has dried up: some of its words have gone blank, and you have six tries to fill them in.

The rules

  • You see the line with its missing words shown as empty tiles, plus who says it and where it comes from.
  • Type the missing letters and press Enter. Spaces and apostrophes are already in place.
  • Each letter is marked: right letter in the right place (orange, with an underline bar), in the missing words but somewhere else (blue, with a dot), or not in them at all (grey).
  • If a letter appears twice in your try but only once in the answer, only one of them is marked.
  • You have six tries.

Which words go missing?

Usually the ending, but always the less predictable part of the line: the punchline or the key image rather than the catchphrase everyone finishes for you. Knowing the film helps; knowing the scene helps more.

Scoring

1,000 points on the first try, then 150 fewer for each extra try: 850, 700, 550, 400 and 250. Not finding it scores 0.

Tips

  • Use the rest of the line: the missing words must fit its grammar and rhythm.
  • Think about who is speaking and what they would say, not just the famous version you half remember.
  • If you are stuck, a first try full of common letters (E, A, R, S, T) still tells you a lot.

Frequently asked questions

Is Prompter colour-blind friendly?

Yes. The two feedback colours are orange and blue, a pair that stays distinct for the common types of colour blindness, and the shapes (an underline bar and a dot) carry the same meaning without colour. Every tile is labelled for screen readers.

Do my tries have to be real words?

No, any letters are allowed, but every try uses one of your six.

When does it change?

Every day at midnight UK time. Past days are in the answers archive.
